A tour de force by America’s great comic playwright, the Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning play is set in Yonkers, NY, in 1942 and is the coming of age story of two brothers, Jay and Arty, who are left to live with their stern grandmother after their father, Eddie, is forced into the life of a traveling salesman following the death of their mother. Coming into their lives are their mentally-challenged and childlike Aunt Bella, their ne’er-do-well Uncle Louie on the run after stealing from some local gangsters, and Bella’s equally dim boyfriend, Johnny, who just wants to marry her and run off to open a restaurant. All the while the boys race to try to raise money to get their father back into their lives… even if that means stealing the $15,000 their grandmother supposedly has hidden away somewhere.
Called “the best play Simon ever wrote” and “one of [his] most impressive and funniest plays,” Lost in Yonkers debuted featuring Kevin Spacey and Mercedes Ruehl and was adapted into a movie starring Richard Dreyfuss. Come join us for this charming and heartfelt journey back in time as Two Planks concludes its 2016-17 Main Stage Season!
“Broadway desperately needed a comedy, a drama, and a hit. With Lost in Yonkers, Mr. Simon gives us all three.”
– Wall Street Journal
“Laughter and tears have come together in a new emotional truth. There are moments in this play when you experience a new kind of laughter… a silent laughter that doesn’t explode into a yuk but implodes straight into your heart.”
